5 things you can do every day to make your day a little brighter (feat. Paddywax)

As I get older, days in seem to turn into days out so much faster. Time passes more quickly, but I also sometimes get caught up in a destination (the weekend, a holiday, an event) rather than enjoying the journey and the present moment of the day I’m in. There are a few things I like to do every day that can help me stay present and express gratitude for the day, but don’t take up a lot of time (or any time at all), so they fit easily into my busy schedule.

Today I wanted to share some of my favorite ways to add a little figurative brightness to my day with Paddywax Candles, who can add the literal brightness.

Set an Intention

Waking up is so daunting. You are immediately engulfed in reality and often are expected to just jump right into your day. This is why I love setting an intention as soon as I wake up. It can be while you’re still under the covers, eyes still closed, and before your mind begins racing with the day.

I also love the ambiguity of the concept of setting an intention. It can be suited to whatever motivates you best – a word, a phrase, a feeling, a goal. There is no wrong way to do it, and so many right ways.

Smile

Happiness causes smiling, and the opposite is also true – it’s science! The action of smiling releases dopamine & serotonin, those feel-good chemicals, in our brain. It’s also been linked to boosting your immune system and even increasing your life expectancy. Even if you aren’t feeling very happy, the mere act of smiling can *trick* your mind into feeling better.

Pay Someone a Compliment

Sometimes the best way to brighten up your day is to brighten up someone else’s! We often hold onto a lot of positive sentiments about others without ever voicing them. I think it’s so important to tell other people what you like about them, however mundane it might seem. People depend on the support of others more than they realize, and when you compliment someone else, you are reminding them that they are valid, they matter, and someone cares about them.

Drink More Water

Imagine if there was a magic elixir that boosted your metabolism, woke you up, refreshed your mood, cleaned your breath, and cleared your skin? Well there is, and it’s that lovely liquid chemically known as dihydrogen monoxide (water, people). I leave a full glass next to my bed and drink it first thing in the morning to wake up – it’s better than coffee!

Do Something Just for Yourself

Most of our time is spent serving others – at work, in social situations, with our families. Living a servant life is a great and rewarding path, but taking care of yourself and your own mental health is equally as important, and it affects how you interact with others, too! There are lots of ways that you can add a little self care into your day, like exercise, meeting up with a friend, or meditating.

I know a lot of you are busy, but self care doesn’t have to require a ton of time or be something monumental. I like to read quietly with a Paddywax candle and some essential oil at night before bed. Some nights, I might only have a few minutes for this, but even the routine of looking forward to it every evening makes me happy. Those minutes, and these little things we do for ourselves, add up quickly.
